Case Study: Home Chef
Using Pick-to-Light for Kitting Highly Perishable Food
Using Pick-to-Light for Kitting Highly Perishable Food
Home Chef uses pick-to-light to quickly and accurately bundle highly perishable ingredients into meal kits.
Problem
Home Chef, part of the Kroger Family of Companies, ships meal kits to subscribers and also sells them at select Kroger grocery stores.
Home Chef needed a way to quickly and accurately bundle highly-perishable food into individual meal kits. Getting the correct ingredients to customers, during peak freshness, is critical for customer retention.
The Challenge:
According to the Motley Fool, meal-kit delivery is one of the most challenging business models, with more than 150 competitors jockeying for market share in an environment in which the packaging and logistics of delivering a highly perishable product profoundly affect customer acquisition and retention.
Solution
One of the easiest ways to reduce costs and maximize operational efficiency for meal kits is by streamlining the process by which ingredients are bundled into an order. Pick-to-light technology is well known in the supply chain, but until recently, it required a large capital outlay and considerable hardware and software changes.
We reimagined pick-to-light for today’s needs and created an affordable wireless Internet-of-Things (IoT) picking technology that is easy to deploy with batteries that can last for years.
Home Chef ordered a starter kit and then scaled up with additional devices across multiple distribution centers.
